Oobleck: green slime from the mind of Dr. Seuss

Oobleck has to be one of the oddest outgrowths of literature I’ve ever seen, but the green slime looks like a blast to make in the kitchen.

The Instructables website says Oobleck is “a non-newtonian fluid. That is, it acts like a liquid when being poured, but like a solid when a force is acting on it. You can grab it and then it will ooze out of your hands. Make enough Oobleck and you can even walk on it!” (Or run, as in this YouTube video.)

Oobleck is named for the goo featured in Dr. Seuss’ book, “Bartholomew and the Oobleck” (1949). It’s a sequel of sorts to “The 500 Hats of Bartholomew Cubbins,” (1938) and features King Derwin of Didd and his young subject.

Drummer for OneRepublic arrested in Denver

The drummer for OneRepublic has pleaded not guilty to charges filed in Denver after his girlfriend said he grabbed her head and threw her down during a fight. Eddie Fisher pleaded not guilty Wednesday to assault, destruction of private property, wrongs to a minor and two counts of disturbing the peace. Police had indicated a child was present. Fisher is free on $550 bond. Lonnie Weygant told officers she tried to hide in the bathroom after the fight Tuesday, but the 38-year-old forced the door open. Fisher told police Weygant hit him in the head and he tried to leave, but she came out and took his dog. Fisher’s lawyer didn’t return a phone message. The tabloids and celebrity newsmagazines can give you a quick peek into celebrities’ lives, but often it’s the audio shows where celebs let it all hang out. Here are the three best podcasts you should be checking out for a window into the minds of your favorite entertainers:

3. NPR’s Fresh Air with Terry Gross

Terry Gross, who has been hosting Fresh Air for more than 25 years, is probably the most well-known celebrity interviewer on the radio. It’s for good reason, too — her show even won a prestigious Peabody Award in 1994 for its “probing questions, revelatory interviews and unusual insight.” Listing the best interviews of the last 25 years seems an impossible task, but some of the best in the past year include those with a poignant, reflective Maurice Sendak; a remarkably candid Stephen Colbert; and an endearing Jimmy Fallon.

Amazon Lending Library. Watch out libraries

Look out libraries, Amazon may have you in its sights with the new Kindle Owners’ Lending Library.

The new program allows Kindle owners to borrow up to one book a month, with no fixed return date. The perk is being bundled with Amazon Prime membership, which includes free shipping and streaming movies for the $79 annual fee. So for pure reading, it isn’t a better deal than a library card at the Enoch Pratt or another area library.

Planet Bluegrass announces Kinfolk Celebration

In the wake of overwhelming demand for Telluride Bluegrass and RockyGrass festival tickets, Planet Bluegrass in announcing an additional mini-festival for this summer.On August 24 and 25, they’ll host the Kinfolk Celebration featuring the Yonder Mountain String Band. Planet Bluegrass is expecting 4,000 people to attend each day and they have the capacity for about half of those people to camp out at Lyons’ Meadow Park and the Planet Bluegrass Ranch.The decision was sparked in part by the popularity of Planet Bluegrass’ other festivals. ‘Hunger Games’ star to throw out first pitch at Reds game

Josh Hutcherson, who plays Peeta in The Hunger Games, will throw out the ceremonial first pitch at the Cincinnati Reds’ game against the Miami Marlins on April 7.

The Reds’ first game of the season will be at 4:10 p.m. on April 5, but the Reds traditionally make a celebration of their first night game — “Opening Night” — as well.

Hutcherson is a native of Union, Ky., which is about 25 minutes away from Cincinnati.
