This is a nice book collecting from A-Z, or 26, visual techniques you can use for design. It’s a creativity book essentially that aims to give you inspiration and ideas.

The examples focuses mostly on print ads and several outdoor displays. They are plentiful and engaging.

Easily recommended to designers.

Joe Paterno resigning — sad end to great legacy

News that Penn State football coach Joe Paterno is resigning, in the aftermath of a sex abuse probe involving a former assistant, marks a sad end to a long-running legacy. Paterno, 84, had been head coach at the school for nearly a half-century, and had built a reputation as a guy with integrity, one who avoided the recruiting scandals that hit other big-time football programs.

So what’s he doing in a book blog? Well, for one thing, Paterno was an English major at Brown University, before building a career in football. And for another, he may be the most-written-about college coach in America. (Though all those autobiographies will have to add a sad coda.) Lastly, I’ve always admired Paterno from afar, and for the past several years, have made a trek with friends to Happy Valley to watch a game. W

Red Rocks puts on its first winter concert

Cold weather be damned, Red Rocks is throwing a winter concert. Friday night, Common and Atmosphere will run the stage of one of the country’s most beautiful amphitheaters, possibly with some light snow coming down. An outdoor show in the middle of a Colorado winter seems kind of crazy, but the powers that be found a few good reasons to do this thing. One of the largest forces behind the project is Icelantic Events Manager Sam Warren, who came up with the idea years ago, sitting at a bar during SIA Snow Show in Las Vegas. He’d heard the show might move to Denver, and told his friend he would start a concert at Red Rocks if it did. Ballabajoomba Poetry Open Mic & Slam returns to House of Rock on Jan. 26th with special guest, six-time National Poetry Slam team member, Christian Drake.

Drake has performed in over sixty cities across the U.S. and Canada, including three National Poetry Slam Finals stages. His poetry combines finely-crafted words with wild, rock-and-roll-inspired performance. His repertoire includes poetry about heartbreak, music formats, war, nature, mythology, love, as well as others.

Ballabajoomba Poetry Open Mic and Slam is the only nationally certified poetry reading in South Texas, in the continuous existence since summer 2000. The series started to promote the literary and spoken word expression in the community of Corpus Christi.

Neither Oprah nor the packed studio audience could believe Hudson when she uttered the number “80.”

‘The Artist’ makes noise at the Golden Globes

The black-and-white silent film “The Artist” came away with the most prizes with three wins at the Golden Globes, but the show spread the love around among a broad range of films and TV shows.

Wins for “The Artist” included best musical or comedy and best actor in a musical or comedy for Jean Dujardin, while the family drama “The Descendants” claimed two awards, as best drama and dramatic actor for George Clooney.

Other acting winners were Meryl Streep, Michelle Williams, Christopher Plummer, and Octavia Spencer, while Martin Scorsese earned the directing honor.

Streep won for dramatic actress as Margaret Thatcher in “The Iron Lady,” her eight win at the Globes.

Williams won for actress in a musical or comedy as Marilyn Monroe in “My Week with Marilyn,” 52 years after Monroe’s win for the same prize at the Globes.
