Most people see working from home as an excellent way to save money on childcare and to spend more time with their children — but it doesn’t always work out that way! To make the most of the time you can spend with your children, it is vital that you set yourself up to be able to work out of the office occasionally — so while your kids enjoy a day at the park, you can be sure you are reachable!

Prepare Your Phone

Most modern mobile phones have all the capabilities you need to stay in touch on the go — it’s just a matter of finding the best ones.

Set up your work emails to divert to your phone, so you can pick these up and respond while you are out. You might need some support from IT to do this, so it’s best to get it set up in advance!

Divert calls to your work phone to your mobile. It’s wise to set a different ring tone to these, to make them noticeable, and prep your children that you might need to answer it. If this seems too complicated, leave a message on your work phone asking for contact by email or fax. Problem solved!

Make sure you can access faxes. Online fax services will give you a number and the ability to read, send and forward faxes as you go. In addition, by installing document-viewing software, you can open documents produced in a wide range of programs. These services are invaluable when it comes to working on the move!

Schedule Your Time

Make sure you have a schedule, and stick to it! If you are taking the kids out in the day, you’ll need to make up some time later even if you were able to be contacted. However, if you schedule this in advance, and work smart, you’ll find that it’s easier to get back up-to-date. If you struggle with motivation, try doing extra work in advance. An hour or two of report writing in the evening seems a lot better if you can look forward to a day at the ball field or park!

Communicate With Your Peers

If you work as part of a team, use an online diary or calendar to show people when you are in your office, and when you are ‘mobile.’ This could be for any reason, from being at an appointment or in meetings, but it will alert them to the possibility that you may be slower in responding or not be able to assist immediately. It will also take the pressure off you a little!

Now, enjoy your time. While you can’t take endless amounts of time off, one of the benefits of working at home is an occasional treat — and you are sure to deserve it!
