After setting a new midnight record with over $43 million, Warner Bros.’ Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows – Part 2 looks to have beat the previous single day and opening day records of $72.7 million held by Summit Entertainment’s The Twilight Saga: New Moon.

According to ERC Box Office, it has grossed $92.1 million in its opening Friday including those $43.5 million from midnight shows and it’s well on its way towards an opening weekend that should easily surpass the current record held by Warner Bros.’ The Dark Knight. Christopher Nolan’s anticipated Batman sequel opened on the same weekend three years ago to the tune of $158.4 million in three days, a record that’s held steady even with the last two “Twilight” movies having bigger opening days.

Granted, the “Harry Potter” finale will be heavily frontloaded once you remove those Thursday midnights but it’s still looking very likely to have an opening weekend northwards of $170 million. Read full text…

Netflix (NFLX) customers reacted angrily Tuesday to the company’s announcement that it is raising — by as much as 60 percent — its prices on plans that entitle subscribers to check out DVDs and stream videos.

The Los Gatos company said it will now charge $15.98 a month for plans that allow users to stream video and check out up to one DVD at a time and $19.98 for streaming and two DVDs at a time. Previously, the company charged $9.99 and $14.99, respectively, for those plans. The price hikes will take effect immediately for new subscribers and Sept. 1 for existing ones.

After the announcement, Los Gatos resident Manish Vaidya switched his subscription from Netflix’s $9.99 combined DVD and streaming plan to a streaming-only plan that costs $7.99 a month.

“I wasn’t happy at all,” said Vaidya, co-founder of a startup smartphone app developer.

‘Horrible Bosses’

Thursday night’s premiere of Warner Bros./New Line “Horrible Bosses” at the Chinese provoked plenty of memories …. of horrible bosses.

“I used to be a waiter in New York,” mused Charlie Day at the after-screening bash at The Colony. “People weren’t very nice. It wasn’t a nice job.”

Director Seth Gordon said the preem provided him with a reminder of why he got into the business in the first place. “I became a director because I’d had horrible bosses and I didn’t want to answer to a lot of people,” he added.

Screenwriter Jonathan Goldstein recalled that he’d joined a law firm in New York in 1995 and found himself surrounded by horrible bosses. Read full text…
