“Buck,” the story of the real horse whisperer Buck Brannaman, comes at you with the understated eloquence of the man himself — a soft-spoken cowboy philosopher changing lives as he gentles horses, an aw-shucks hero who never claims to be more than an ordinary man. What a relief in times saturated with news of the worst of humanity to see something of the best.

In her first documentary, which won the coveted audience award at the Sundance Film Festival this year, director Cindy Meehl mirrors that sensibility. The film is deeply moving yet never maudlin in telling this hard-knocks-but-hope-infused story.

The Alamo Drafthouse and Austin Film Society celebrate the 20th anniversary of the release of Richard Linklaters Slacker Wednesday night with a Rolling Roadshow presentation of the Austin classic at Austin Studios .

Linklater and some of the films cast members will be on hand to present the movie that serves as a moving collage of Austins cultural landscape as the city wandered from the 80s into the 90s.

In addition to the film that put Linklater and Austin film on the map, the evening will include footage of Slacker 2011, a remake of Linklaters film as interpreted by 23 local filmmakers.

The 8 p.m. screening is free for all Austin Film Society members.

The deadline for submitting your film for the sixth annual Show Me Shorts Film Festival has been extended by one week to 11 July.

Show Me Shorts is New Zealand’s major national short film festival, screening nationwide every November. This is the final opportunity for filmmakers to submit a short film for the 2011 festival and be part of a selection of the very best short films from around the world.

Show Me Shorts is going global this year with the addition of a new, out of competition international category. For the first time, entries are open to short films from outside of New Zealand and Australia. The best of the international entrants will join the selection of Australasian shorts in screenings nationwide from 3 November.

Eighteen Documentary Fellows from nine projects will take part in the 8th Documentary Edit and Story Lab (June 24 – July 2) and ninth Composers + Documentary Lab (July 6-12) at Sundance Resort in Sundance, Utah, Sundance Institute said Wednesday.

Documentary Film Program (DFP) provides a global resource for contemporary independent documentary film, including the Sundance Documentary Fund, Labs/Workshops and other support opportunities. The DFP supports nonfiction storytelling about a broad range of contemporary social issues, and promotes the exhibition of documentary films to audiences.

The group of 18 were selected from a pool of 40 – 60 active DFP-supported projects and participate in whats described by Sundance Institute as an intensive, residential retreat focused on creative support around issues of story and structure.
