LOS ANGELES, Feb 6 (Reuters) – “The Roommate,” a low-budget thriller that received a unanimous thumbs-down from top critics, opened in the top spot at the weekend box office in North America, as the studios braced for the annual sales hit from Sunday’s Super Bowl.

According to studio estimates issued on Sunday, “The Roommate” earned about $15.6 million in its first three days, equivalent to its production budget and in line with expectations.

“Sanctum,” a 3-D underwater adventure produced by James Cameron, followed at a distant No. 2 with $9.2 million.

Last weekend’s champion, the Anthony Hopkins thriller “The Rite,” tumbled to No. 6 with $5.6 million.

Walt Disney Pictures has provided ComingSoon.net with an extended version of the Super Bowl spot for Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides. Opening in 3D, 2D and IMAX 3D theaters on May 20, the comedy adventure stars Johnny Depp, Penelope Cruz, Ian McShane, Kevin R. McNally, Astrid Berges-Frisbey, Sam Claflin and Geoffrey Rush.

I think with the name James Cameron attached to this project clearly branded ‘SANCTUM’ to be one of the year’s most anticipated films. UNIVERSAL started airing their trailers back in the fall, and I think cleverly done seeing as they presented tidbits of the film (obviously, because it’s a trailer) followed by a ‘Based on true events’ mention. Once one sees that the film’s based on actual events, I know it entices ones’ interest and immediately research starts. Caves, Divers, Darkness, Panic-stricken segments and comments like “I’ll see you on the other side” by one of the actors doesn’t leave quite a pleasing swirl within your system. Barney’s Version earned a leading 11 nominations for Canada’s Genie Awards on Tuesday, including a best actor nod for Paul Giamatti, who potrays the titular Barney Panofsky. (Sabrina Lantos/eOne Films)

Barney’s Version and Incendies, two of the most prominent films on the Canadian film landscape last year, lead the nominees for the 31st Genie Awards.

Director Richard J. Lewis’s cinematic adaptation of Mordecai Richler’s final novel led with 11 nominations for English Canada’s top movie honour, including recognition of Paul Giamatti’s turn as the titular Barney Panofsky (best actor) and Dustin Hoffman as his father, Izzy (best supporting actor).
